Victim Personal Statement

Checklists

All Victim Personal Statements should now be obtained on a separate MG11
Begin the VPS with, "I have been given the Victim Personal Statement (VPS) leaflet and the VPS scheme has been explained to me. What follows is what I wish to say in connection with this matter. I understand that what I say may be used in various ways and that it may be disclosed to the defence."
Explain the VPS may be read aloud by the CPS or the victim themselves - do they agree to this?
Make the victim aware they can be questioned about the VPS at court
Explain about the risks to the victims privacy
Ensure the victim knows the VPS may be reported by the media if they are present at court
It is a matter of judicial discretion how the VPS will be presented (in full or in part) at court
How has the event affected the victim physically?
How has the event affected the victim emtionally?
How has the event affected the victim financially?
Has the event affected the victim in any other way?
The victim may NOT express an opinion on suitable punishment for the offender as this is for the courts to decide.
Ensure the victims preferences in regards to the VPS are documented on an MG6 form
