1 Obligation to respect Human Rights

Duty on police to uphold and protect all ECHR rights in every action.

2 Right to life

Use of force must be absolutely necessary and proportionate. Applies to firearms, pursuits, restraint.

3 Prohibition of torture

No inhuman or degrading treatment. Key in custody, restraint, detainee care.

5 Right to liberty and security

Lawful arrest/detention only. Must justify necessity and legality.

6 Right to a fair trial

Disclosure, interviews, evidence gathering must be fair and lawful.

8 Right to respect for private and family life

Searches, entry, surveillance must be necessary, lawful and proportionate.

10 Freedom of expression

Public protests, speech. Restrictions must be lawful and proportionate.

11 Freedom of assembly and association

Public order policing. Must balance rights vs risk.

14 Prohibition of discrimination

Decisions must not be based on race, gender, religion etc.
