Victim Personal Statement
**POLICE OFFICER TO READ TO VICTIM WHO HAS PROVIDED A STATEMENT OF EVIDENCE**
The Victim Personal Statement Scheme has been introduced to provide the opportunity for you, as a victim of crime, to explain how this crime has affected you.
It may be taken into account in any court proceedings when bail, compensation or sentence are considered, if the defendant either pleads guilty or is found guilty.
It will become part of the case papers and will be seen by all Criminal Justice agencies i.e. Crown Prosecution Service, Defence, Magistrates and Judges.
You may be asked questions about your VPS by the Defence during any trial. If your VPS is read out in court, it could be reported on in the media.
There is no legal requirement to provide this VPS. The court will not draw any adverse conclusions from the decision you make regarding whether to make one. If you choose not to make a VPS at this time, you may be able to make one at a later date, provided there is time before the case comes to court or the offender is sentenced.
You cannot change or withdraw your VPS after you have made it, however you may be able to make a further VPS to add or clarify the original.
You may either ask to be allowed to read out relevant parts of your VPS in court yourself, or you can ask to have someone read it out on your behalf (usually a Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor). You may change your mind about reading out your VPS.
